Solid Timber Flooring and Parquetry

Probably the most beautiful hard floors are made of solid hardwood timber, installed, sanded and polished in situ. Various tree species are available but the list is quiet short. Each species has its own colouration and artistic bueauty features which are uncopiable. But the price fully installed can range from $100.00 per square metre to $300.00/sq. metre.

Only 10% of first home buyers purchase such a floor with second buyers over 50%. Third and over nearly all go for such a floor.

The limitations of such a floor are the limited colour ranges that they afford you andthe style that they impose upon your interior design scheme. The colour ranges are mainly yellows, oranges, beiges aand reds. The style is skewed to the country look or period look. One can experience difficulty in making a modern style, interior design look.

It is raw, but, dressed, seasoned (dried), full-bodied timber floorboards, sanded and polished. All one has to do is install them on the floor by gluing them or otherwise affixing them to the floor or floating them on the floor.

A solid timber floor when installed as seasoned raw timber and sanded and polished on site creates the ultimate beauty in the interior of your home. With the fall of the Australian dollar it is cost effective without compromising quality.

The Australian timber species are by far the most appealing to this domestic market. There is a richness and warmth in the timbers natural coloration, the hues starting with yellows and creams and progressing through to oranges, pinks and reds.

The timbers have natural markings and character, and this combined with the variations of the timbers natural colouration produces a fascinating and sophisticated floor surface.

The sanding and polishing of such a surface highlights and enhances this natural beauty even more.

From a health point of view the low antistatic and dust properties are better for avoiding allergies and asthma. Of all floors they are the easiest to clean and maintain.

The timber is delivered on site by truck and carried into the house. It is aclimatised in situ for the timber moisture content to stablise. Two methods of installation are followed:

• Direct stick to the concrete slab. Here the concrete slab is waterproofed by the use of a chemical barrier. This a chemical is applied to the slab by a roller. Upon it drying the floorboards are then are glued to the slab. Once the glue has after about a week, the timber is sanded and polished. In polishing, usually one coat of timber sealer is first applied and upon it drying, the floor is lightly sanded. Then a coat of laquer is applied with a roller and upon it drying the floor is lightly sanded again, and then a second and final coat of laquer is applied and left to dry.
• The second method, and more widely followed than the first, involves waterproofing the concrete slab as in the first method, or alternatively using a film of builders plastic to cover the entire slab, and then covering the slab with an A-grade plywood (waterproof) and affixing this pywood to the slab wwith steel anchors every 150 mm intervals. The timber floorboards are then secret-nailed to this plywood. The floor is then sanded and polished as in the above.

The timber's surface hardness can be important to people as it dictates the indentibility of the surface when furniture is dragged over it. This hardness is quantified in its "JANKA RATING". The higher the number the harder the timber surface.
